Experiment
Our experiment included taking a watermelon and placing it inside a helmet. First we started out with a ladder. We dropped the helmet from about how high off the ground a person's head would be if they were riding a bike, so we dropped it from about 4 feet 8 inches which equals 56 inches. For others the height might be different but this is the average height we chose. Kait sat on the bike with the helmet on while Maddie measured how high off the ground Kait was. Next we dropped the watermelons.
The first watermelon we tested we dropped two times with a helmet (Stacy). The reason we dropped Stacy twice was because a number of kids fall more than once so doing it this way would be more realistic. Next, we did a control experiment with a watermelon without a helmet on (Fred). With Fred we dropped him without a helmet. Lastly, we also had a watermelon that did not have anything happen to it (Charlotte). We left her alone to help compare the other two watermelons.
When we were done dropping watermelons we went into the back patio and sliced each watermelon open. The results of the experiment were very interesting. We were careful to keep the three watermelons separate to avoid confusion. This experiment was enjoyable and we learned a lot from this experiment.
