The point of the science fair is to determine answers to the many questions asked by science and the people who study it. For our project this year we decided to compare endothermic and exothermic reactions. We had to do a lot of research to perform this experiment. The two chemicals that we used in our experiment were ammonium nitrate and calcium chloride. A detailed description of our experiment follows in the paragraphs below.

Our experiment consists of seeing how the temperature inside a test tube changes when different chemicals are added to water inside the tube. For the first part of our experiment, we poured ¼ of an inch of calcium chloride into the test tube. We then added room temperature water into the tube until it covered the calcium chloride. For the second part of our experiment, we put ¼ of an inch of ammonium nitrate into the test tube. We added room temperature water into the test tube until it covered the ammonium nitrate.

During the first part of our experiment, we noticed that the sides and bottom of the test tube turned 31 degrees warmer compared to the original temperature of 74 degrees. We did notice that the temperature of the test tube quickly returned to normal. On the second part of the experiment, we noticed that the exact opposite of the first experiment occurred. The tube turned 48 degrees colder than the original temperature of 74 degrees. One thing that was also very noticeable was that it took longer for the temperature to change using ammonium nitrate than it did using calcium chloride.
