Hypothesis   

We hypothesize that the capacitors in parallel  will make the projectile go faster.


Purpose

    Our purpose in making this coil gun is to test what type of capacitor bank is faster, Parallel, or in series. Series means that the capacitors will be lined up plus to minus and so on makes a higher voltage and parallel gives more amps. Amps will make it go faster. This has been suggested by the instructions I have gotten from the internet.


Research

    Through lots of research we have found many different sources to help us out with making our coil gun. In our research we found out how to wire the coil, and change many of the parts on a disposable camera. We found out that when you send an electrical current through a wire it will create a magnetic field that will sent a projectile on its way. For this to work you need to fire something that is made out of metal.

    Through out all of our research we have been instructed to disassemble and reassemble a disposable camera in many different ways. One way was to rewire the wire that goes from the flash, into the coil that we have made, and then send it back on its original course. Even though we tried all of these different ways to get our coil gun to fire they all failed and the reason they failed is still unexplained.

    Our research that we have found out about the power source was that it would have to be powered by things called flash caps or in other words flash capacitors. As I have explained in the Beginning page a capacitor is the same exact thing as a battery except it releases all of its energy in one quick burst. The way we were told to charge our flash caps is to disconnect the AA battery connector and exchange it for a 9 volt battery plug.

    The next thing to talk about is the way to assemble the coil. Our research explained that there also a few different ways to make the coil right. One way is that you take a high gauge copper wire and wrap about an inch around the tubing. We were told that the tubing could either be an average pen tube or a very small metal tubing. Then and after every layer you are supposed to insulate it with electrical tape. The other way is to take a small gauge wire and go around about five times and put super glue on it. This is how you make the coil and what tubing that is supposed to be used.
