Discussion

Our hypothesis was wrong, unfortunately. We predicted that the kitchen scraps would work better as fertilizer, but the regular soil actually worked better. In the regular soil the cilantro sprouted in 8 days, the spinach sprouted in 4 days, the radish sprouted in 2 days, and the peas sprouted in 3 days. In the kitchen scraps the cilantro sprouted in 7 days, the spinach sprouted in 5 days, the radish sprouted in 2 days, and the peas sprouted in 3 days. In the coffee grinds the cilantro sprouted in 10 days, the spinach did not sprout at all, the radish sprouted in 5 days, and the peas sprouted in 12 days.

When we were observing them we took some extra notes. When the seeds sprouted in the coffee grinds they looked pretty dry. In the kitchen scraps some of he kitchen scraps had some pepper seeds in it, which might choke he plant. In regular dirt all the plants looked really healthy.

We also measured the plant’ height. In the regular dirt the pea seeds grew, 37 cm, 33 cm, and 36 cm, the radish seeds grew 8 cm, 1 cm, and 11 cm, the spinach seeds grew 5.5 cm and 5 cm, and the cilantro seeds grew 4.5 cm and 4.5 cm. In the coffee grinds/ tea leaves the pea seeds grew 2cm, 7.5 cm, and 0 cm, the radish seeds grew 2.4 cm and 1 cm, the spinach seeds grew 0 cm and 0 cm, and the cilantro seeds grew 2.5 cm and 5 cm. In the kitchen scraps the pea seeds grew 25 cm, 27.5 cm, and 27 cm, the radish seeds grew 7 cm, 6 cm, 5 cm, and 6 cm, the spinach seeds grew 4 cm and 1.5 cm, and the cilantro seeds grew 3 cm, 3.5 cm, 4 cm, and 5.5 cm.
