For my experiment I choose four foods from each flavor area of taste
buds. In my case I choose chocolate for sweet, lemon for sour, saltine
crackers for salty and orange rind for bitter. while tasting these
flavors you would have to do three things: first taste it as you
normally would, then plug your nose while tasting it, and then while
smelling a cotton ball with peppermint extract on it, you would taste it
for the last time. I made a plan that I
would survey people of different ages and genders to see if there where
differences.
I
survived 15 people. 10 were female and 5 were male. I
divided them into 3 age groups 13-25, 26-50, and 51+. There were 9 in
the 1st group, 4 in the 2nd group and 2 in the 3rd group.
To understand the
differences between the ages and genders I created a survey. The survey
asked the same questions for each flavor category. It questioned the
people about what they tasted and how strong that taste was. It also
asked them what types of food they enjoyed and if they are a picky
eater.
In asking these
questions you can conclude many things. By asking
if they were a picky eater I found out if I was right in saying that
older people are less picky about what they eat because they have less
taste buds. In doing the survey you couldn't actually find out how much
they are really tasting or smelling, only enough to understand how smell
affects taste.
